Date Walnut Bars


Crust:

3 cups unsifted flour
1/2 cup sugar
1 cup butter (2 sticks), softened
1/2 teaspoon salt

Grease bottom and sides of 15x10 baking pan (jelly roll pan - with sides at least 1 inch high). In large bowl, beat flour, 1/2 cup sugar, butter and salt with mixer at medium speed until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Press firmly and evenly into pan. Bake in 350 degree oven for 20 minutes.

Filling:

Combine:
2/3 cup brown sugar
2/3 cup granulated sugar
4 eggs
2 teaspoon vanilla

Mix together and add to mixture above:
4 tablespoons flour (1/4 cup)
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
dash of nutmeg (optional)

Stir in:
2 cups chopped walnuts
2 8oz packages pitted, chopped dates

Pour mixture over baked crust. Bake at 350 for 20-30 minutes or until firm around the edges. Cool in pan on wire rack. Cut when cool.
