Brownie Pudding Cake


1 cup sifted flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
3/4 cup granulated sugar
2 tablespoons cocoa
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 tablespoons melted shortening
3/4 to 1 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup cocoa
1 3/4 cups hot water

Mix together flour, baking powder, sugar, 2 tablespoons cocoa and salt. Add milk, vanilla, and shortening. Mix until smooth. Add nuts. Pour into greased 8x8 inch pan.

Mix brown sugar and 1/4 cup cocoa. Sprinkle over batter. Pour hot water over entire batter. Bake in 350 degree oven for 40-45 minutes.

Mom used to make a lemon pudding cake that was similar to this recipe, but came from a box. It is no longer available.
